A Member of Parliament of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Pratap Simha has compared Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, and called the 20-year-old an "anti-national".

Simha, who represents the Mysuru constituency in Karnataka, shared a photo of Kaur and Ibrahim on Sunday. On Monday, he defended his tweet, claiming he had shared an image created by another person, but he stood by it.

"Dear Media, I hv simply reposted d FB post f Shankanad n I stand by it. My constituency is facing drought, show us d way2 get #Azadi frm it. (sic)," he tweeted on Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Kaur lodged a complaint with the Delhi Commission for Women on Monday after she alleged that she was being harassed online with rape threats. Kaur had taken a stand against the violence caused in Ramjas College last week allegedly by students affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Earlier, she had appeared in a video asking for leaders in the Indian and Pakistani governments to stop fighting and promote peace between the two nations.

DCW chief Swati Maliwal said that she would write to the Delhi Police commissioner to immediately arrest those who had harassed Kaur. "The security of Gurmehar Kaur and her family is now the responsibility of Delhi Police," she said.
