A 40-year-old man was arrested in Rajasthan's Alwar district on the charge of selling his 14-year-old daughter for ₹7 lakh.
According to a report in the Hindustan Times, Balveer Singh, a resident of Laxmangarh village, was trying to put his daughter inside an SUV and have her whisked away when other residents of the village came to her aid.
Apparently, Singh had gone to Haryana to look for work, which is where he struck a deal with three other men — Leeladhar Jat, Ishwar Singh and Subhash Agarwal — to sell his minor daughter into marriage to a Haryana-based family. The HT report said that Singh is a daily wage labourer and the 14-year-old girl is his eldest child.
The police have registered an FIR and all four have been booked under sections 363 (kidnapping) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
The Times of India reported that in her complaint, the girl claimed that her mother was complicit too, and refused to go back to her home. Instead, she said that she wanted to go live with her grandmother.
A policeman told TOI that Singh had been assured that his daughter would be married to a 35-year-old man in Haryana but they were investigating to ascertain whether the deal was part of a flesh-trade racket.
