Former Chief Justice Of India, Altamas Kabir, Dies At 68

He had been unwell for a while.

NEW DELHI -- Former Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir passed away on Sunday morning after prolonged illness. He was 68 years old.

The former CJI was not well for past some time.

Serving as the CJI from September 2012 to July 2013, Kabir was the 39th Chief Justice of India.

He was also the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court in 2005.

Justice Kabir also assumed the office of acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court on 11 January 2005.

Kabir who was born in Calcutta in 1948 studied law at the University of Calcutta. He also held a degree in History from Presidency College.

His family hailed from Faridpur in present-day Bangladesh and his father was a prominent Congress politician and trade Union leader.
