In an interesting turn of events, 10 policemen from the jail escort party of Navi Mumbai police have come under the scanner for helping a prisoner awaiting trial to flee from the hospital, allegedly so he could spend some 'quality time' with his wife at a south Mumbai hotel.

Hanumant Sadashiv Patil alias Prem was arrested in 2013 for the murder of a CIDCO employee over a land dispute. He had been kept in Taloj jail for the last 18 months and had recently, complained of hemorrhoids. He was later taken for a check-up at the JJ Hospital.

According to Mid-Day, the 28-year-old murder undertrial allegedly bribed three personnel to allow him to meet his wife at a hotel. After the policemen fell for the ruse, Patil fled from there. On realising that they had been set-up, the policemen then cooked up a story of him having fled from the hospital.

As per the report, Patil was guarded by three escort personnel and after his medical test at JJ Hospital, he offered them ₹40,000 so that he could meet his wife. The three of them allegedly accepted the money and took him to Hotel Brightway on Maulana Shaukat Ali Road where Patil's wife, Manali, was already waiting for him. On reaching there, one policeman stood outside the room, while the other two waited outside the hotel.

"Sensing an opportunity to escape, Patil escaped from the rear window of the hotel room," said a senior police official. The policemen learnt of his escape only after the hotel manager heard a loud thud on the ground floor, where Patil had landed after jumping from the window. Scared of the repercussions and their involvement in the escape, the policemen claimed that he gave them the slip while buying medicines at the hospital. The lie was soon caught by the investigators when they uncovered CCTV footage.

The 10 policemen, who were responsible for Patil's custody, have now been suspended for failing to report his absence, while the three of them who accompanied him to the hotel, have been suspended for criminal negligence.
