The male-female sex ratio in India is still highly skewed, and Madhya Pradesh is one of the states where the disparity is especially wide, according to the 2011 census. But good news is that the residents of the state are trying to bring about a change.

In the Mandsaur district, parents are putting up the names of their daughters on nameplates outside their homes in a bid to empower them.

While traditionally the name of the male member of the house is up on the nameplates, the trend is gradually changing. But having the name of girl children on nameplates, as an initiative, may be a first.

According to a report in The Hindustan Times, more than 100 families in the Mandasur city have put their daughter's names on the nameplates.

The drive began on 24 January, which is celebrated as the National Girl Child Day. And the initiative has young girls thrilled.

Chaitali Neema, a 12-year old, whose father put her and her sister's names on the nameplate told the paper, "It was a surprise gift and this is possibly the best gift I have ever received in my life. Both of us now feel added ownership of our home."

While India struggles to make life easier for its women, it is these little initiatives that help change several mindsets.
