Controversial Bastar top cop SRP Kalluri, who was reportedly sent on medical leave last week, is back and has been attached to the police headquarters in Raipur without any charge.

According to a report in The Indian Express, the posting was given to him after Kalluri called DGP AN Upadhyaya, asking him for a post.

It was reported last week that Kalluri had been forced to go on leave for a period of 90 days. Other reports had suggested that this was because Kalluri needed a kidney transplant.

According to a report in The Hindustan Times, the NHRC's allegations against the Chhattisgarh police, of having raped at least 16 adivasi women in Bijapur, had unsettled the government which also thought that if not controlled, these human rights violations could be blamed on them.

Kalluri is accused of harassing journalists, activists, and professors who have visited the Bastar region and reported the atrocities of the police under his leadership.

Recently, Kalluri courted controversy when he he allegedly sent abusive messages to those who had asked for activist Bela Bhatia's safety after she had been attacked.

The Hindustan Times quoted a senior officer as saying, "The government has always appreciated Mr Kalluri's role in fighting Maoism, but any government must consider a whole range of factors including the NHRC."

While Kalluri had been accused of many human rights violations earlier, the outcry after the attack on Bhatia forced the government to take action.
