Only hours after President Pranab Mukherjee accepted Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan's resignation, he handed over the additional charge of the state to Banwarilal Purohit, the existing Governor of Assam.

Shanmuganathan had stepped down from his post on Thursday night after accusations by a section of Raj Bhavan employees of "seriously compromising" the dignity of his office. A woman job aspirant had alleged that Shanmuganathan had made advances when she appeared for an interview at the Raj Bhavan.

Nearly a 100 Raj Bhavan staff had petitioned Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to remove the Governor, accusing him of running a 'young ladies club' at the Raj Bhavan.

According to tweets from the official Rashtrapati Bhavan Twitter handle, the President also appointed PB Acharya, Governor of Nagaland, to discharge functions of Arunachal Pradesh. Shanmuganathan had additional charge of Arunachal Pradesh.

The petition stated that Shanmuganathan, who took over as the Governor of Meghalaya in May 2015, had converted the Raj Bhavan into a place "where young ladies come and go at will on direct orders of the Governor... Many of them have direct access to his bedroom."
