1:29 pm: Govt to move Jallikattu bill this evening

Amid protests in Tamil Nadu that are turning violent, PTI reported state Speaker P Dhanapal as saying that the government will move the bill, to replace the Jallikattu ordinance in the Assembly this evening.

1:16 pm: Madurai protesters maintain calm

After news of stone pelting in some areas, reports suggest that the protesters have maintained calm since a word from the commissioner of police.

12:48 PM: The peaceful protests at Chennai's Marina beach over the last few days by supporters of Jallikattu, a centuries-old bull taming sport, turned violent on Monday as protestors set a police station on fire and burnt vehicles on the road, leading to police forcibly evicting them from the area.

Visuals tweeted out by news agency ANI showed vehicles up in flames and smoke billowing from the Ice House police station in Chennai.

Clashes were reported between protesters and police in Madurai's Alanganallur, where the injured protesters were taken to hospital.

11:35 AM: Police had detained more than 100 students near Meenakshi Hall in Coimbatore.

11:18 AM: Kamal Haasan cautioned against aggressive police action against protestors.

8:27 AM:

Monday morning witnessed a renewed clash between agitated locals and the police at Marina Beach, now a battleground for the Jallikattu issue, as protesters swarmed in droves demanding a permanent solution and not a 'temporary' ordinance. The Chennai city police had earlier requested the protesters to leave Marina Beach in a peaceful manner as "their purpose has been fully achieved" after the state government promulgated an ordinance on Saturday.
