The Reserve Bank of India refused to accept a man's request to exchange ₹50,000 in old, demonetised notes left to him by his deceased father.
The RBI told the man that only NRIs could exchange old, demonetised notes now and that too at the head office in Delhi.
According to a report in News18, Mastan Singh Maran's father died of old age on 26 December 2016. When the family was cleaning the room, they stumbled upon ₹50,000 in old notes, stashed away in a cupboard. At 93, the family members claim, the old man could barely remember much and had forgotten to tell anyone about the hidden cash.
Maran, who is from Bhopal, furnished many documents — from hospital bills to death certificates — at the RBI office in a bid to convince them to let him exchange the money, but to no avail. The RBI officials cited the new regulations from their headquarters and refused to take the demonetised notes.
