A male teacher in Aurangabad's Beed district has been accused of sexually abusing several girl students in a government-aided residential school. The accused, who is on the run, allegedly forced girls students from class 7 to bathe naked in the open during the day. He would then sexually abuse these 12-year-olds at night, reported The Times of India.

According to the report, one of the students wrote to an advocacy group 'Lek Ladki Abhiyan', detailing how this teacher began abusing her after she was allegedly married off by her parents. She alleged that he had been abusing her for five months.

After the advocacy group immediately rushed to the school and interviewed other students, who corroborated the story and alleged they had been abused in the same manner, the teacher was suspended. The local police lodged a case under several sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and Sexual Harassment Act of the Indian Penal Code against him.

"We visited the school accompanied by senior government officials from the social welfare department. When asked, the girls shared their experiences of sexual abuse as mentioned in the letter," said Abhiyan founder Varsha Deshpande told TOI.

There are about 120 students in the school, including three dozen girl students. Meanwhile assistant commissioner with the social welfare department (Beed) Ravindra Shinde earlier told TOIthat they were conducting an inquiry into the alleged incident. "The inquiry at our level is still in progress and we will serve a show-cause notice to the school management once it is over," he said. "We also prevailed upon the school management for lodging a police complaint in the matter."
