While the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) sought a report from the home ministry on the alleged poor quality of food after constable Tej Bahadur Yadav raised the issue, the BSF has said that there's adequate rations available to the soldiers.
Now Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, before there are complaints in the Army, said that he 'personally' monitors food being served to the Indian Army.
Parrikar said he has ordered serving of only FSSAI-approved chicken.
Speaking to reporters on sidelines of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, he said he would not be able to comment much about BSF as it comes under Home Ministry.
"But in last two years, for the Army we have been continuously evaluating that whether satisfaction level for the food being served has increased or not. I am myself monitoring it," he said.
The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in 2012-13 had made certain observation in a report and "we are improving it", he said.
"We have supplied frozen chicken to 26 centres. Now we have issued direction that in next two years FSSAI-approved frozen chicken is supplied to every unit. So that quality automatically improved," he said.
In the Facebook video, BSF jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav had alleged poor-quality food being served to paramilitary troops at border areas. He claimed that after 10 hours of duty, all that they get is a soup made of turmeric and salt, sans lentils and a few burnt chapatis.
Left red-faced, BSF has came out with fresh guidelines for maintaining high quality of food for its personnel along the border.
Meanwhile, after Tej Bahadur Yadav's video went viral, it sort opened the floodgates. A CRPF constable Jeet Singh, has uploaded a video addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in which he has complained about the dire conditions in which CRPF jawans have to perform their duties. "No medical facilities, no leaves, pension stopped..." he said in the video.
