After a backlash from customers in October 2016 when Reliance Jio was declared the slowest data network by TRAI, the mobile and broadband network service has made a comeback in the ranking charts. Reliance Jio now tops the download charts with an average speed of 9.9 Mbps for its 4G network. It is followed by Airtel at 5.5 Mbps and Telenor at 5.4 Mbps. Unlike Jio which offers only 4G LTE services, the older networks such as Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, and Telenor also offer 2G and 3G network services.
In the 4G segment, Airtel is at second place with 8.1 Mbps followed by Vodafone at 7.5 Mbps.
Reliance Jio still lags behind in its upload speed, registering an average of only 2.6 Mbps and with the 5th spot in rankings. Vodafone, Airtel, and Idea secured the podium with 4.1 Mbps, 3.9 Mbps, and 3.3 Mbps respectively.
Meanwhile, all Jio customers, old and new, are eligible for its 'Happy New Year Offer' scheme. The scheme has a cap of 1 GB free data usage per day, as opposed to the 4 GB cap in the earlier Welcome offer. The new offer is valid until 31 March, 2017.
According to a recently released TRAI report, Jio scored top customer additions in the month of October 2016 as well. The company succeeded in getting 19.6 million new users to sign up. In December 2016, Jio had declared that it had over 50 million customers.
The TRAI report also indicates that Jio now has a market share of 3.3 percent and it is growing. Its competitors have made substantial efforts to retain customers and gain new ones by offering various data and voice packs at lower prices. Airtel is giving 3 GB of free 4G data to select prepaid and postpaid plan users.
