It is no secret that porn is one of the biggest movers of Internet traffic. And, that 'Digital' India is one of the top consumers of porn worldwide. A year-in-review report by the leading adult content website, PornHub, ranks India as the 4th biggest consumer of porn among countries worldwide. Last year, the PornHub report had ranked India 3rd.
According to the report, Indians love watching porn related to India. While 'teen porn' was the most searched for category by Indian Internet users, they mostly searched for porn categories with the term 'Indian' in them.
The report also says that Sunny Leone was the most-watched adult star by Indians, followed by Mia Khalifa and Lisa Ann. Intriguingly, many searched for the term 'Hindi audio' throughout the year. While ranked 4th in porn consumption, Indian seemed to have spent less time surfing for porn than they did the previous year. The average viewing session of 8 minutes and 20 seconds for 2016 is 70 seconds lesser than 2015.
While porn surfing is considered to be dominated by males, 26 percent porn watchers worldwide were women last year, which is a 2-percent increase over the previous year. In India, 30 percent porn watchers were female. Adult content is also one of the largest draws for the young population on the Internet and, reflecting that, 48 percent Indian users were aged between 18 and 24.
Mobile devices were consumers' favoured mode for watching porn videos worldwide. A good 61 percent of porn watching happened over smartphones, a gain of 9 percent over the previous year. In India, 70 percent porn-surfers viewed content on phones, while 28 percent used the desktop computer.
Religious sentiments also affect porn-watching trends, as was underscored by PornHub data that traffic on the website went down 17 and 15 percent respectively on Diwali and Ramadan.
Some other non-country-specific trends suggest that 'Overwatch' and 'Pokemon' were, oddly enough, also among the most searched terms because of the release of the respective games. On the technological front, there were almost 1,800 virtual reality-based adult videos uploaded throughout the year. Superheroes such as Harley Quinn were on top of the chart for most searched fictional characters.
Overall, a record 3,110 petabytes of porn was streamed through PornHub throughout the year. Which means that almost 99 GB of adult content was watched every second. According to PornHub, if all the porn watched were to be stored in USB sticks, a total of 194 million sticks would be required, which, put end to end, would be a whopping 11,000 km long. On an average, 12.5 videos were watched per person on the planet.
There were almost 23 billion visits to Porn Hub, with 19.1 million days of videos consumed.
