Qualcomm has kicked off the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in style by launching a new flagship chipset, called Snapdragon 835. The chipset is a completely refreshed version, with a ton of new features. The company's last lead chipset, Snapdragon 821, was just a minor improvement over Snapdragon 820.

Snapdragon 835 is 27 percent faster than its predecessor and 40 percent more energy efficient. The new modem included in the chipset can support up to one gigabit speed of LTE. It also supports Google's Daydream VR standards. On the graphics front, it is 25 percent faster than Snapdragon 820, displaying 60x more colours. This will provide display makers a wider colour gamut to experiment with.

The newest entrant uses a total of eight Kryo cores, four of which are high powered cores now clocked at 2.45 GHz and the other four are power saving cores clocked at 1.9 GHz.

There are plenty of enhancements in the imaging front as well. Snapdragon 835 can support a single 32 MP camera or two 16 MP cameras. The iPhone 7 Plus, by comparison, has two 12 MP cameras. The chipset also hosts implementation for hybrid AF, hardware face detection and Electronic Image Stabilization 3.0 (EIS).

On the visuals front, there is new support introduced for Vulkan API, DirectX 12, OpenGL 3.2 and more. One of the more interesting parts of the Qualcomm chipsets of late has been the Quick Charge technology. The company has implemented the 4th iteration of this technology in Snapdragon 835. With dual channel charge Quick Charge 4.0 is 20 percent faster and 5 degrees cooler. The company claims that 5 minutes of charging will give a smartphone 5 hours of battery life.

The chip also has support for Windows 10, as Microsoft recently announced that the operating system will work on ARM processors soon. So, look forward to some Windows phones and tablets in some size. It will be up to smartphone makers to use this platform to make the best devices of 2017.
