A case that dates back to 2015 has thrown up a unique way in which crafty Indian in-laws demand dowry. A 24-year-old woman from Bengaluru registered a case of dowry harassment against her in-laws after they allegedly asked her to get Rs 5 lakh from her parents for her honeymoon trip.

The complaint, filed earlier this year at the Ramamurthynagar police station, states that the couple, who married in 2015, fell out after her husband and his parents demanded that she pay them Rs 5 lakh as money for their honeymoon. This was apart from the cash and gifts her family had already shelled out for her marriage as dowry, according to the Bangalore Mirror.

The in laws also allegedly wanted a new car for their son and when the woman and her family could not meet that demand, she was harassed and thrown out of the house, the report said. Within a month she filed the police complaint, but the police could only catch up with her husband and in-laws after they returned from a trip from the US, the Mirror said.

The High Court has granted anticipatory bail to the husband and his parents and advised the investigating officer to get the husband and wife to settle the dispute amicably.
