TN Govt Names Girija Vaidyanathan Chief Secretary, Removing Rama Rao Who Faced IT Raids On Wednesday

This comes after the Income Tax Department had raided the former Chief Secretary's residence.

A government order has announced that IAS office Girija Vaidyanathan, who is also Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner of Land Administration, will replace P Rama Mohana Rao as the new Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu.

This comes a day after income tax raids in the houses and offices of Rao saw several opposition parties demanding his resignation.

Vaidynathan was Additional Chief Secretary/Commissioner of Land Administration prior to this.

She will also hold the additional charge of Vigilance Commissioner and Commissioner for Administrative Reforms the posts additionally held by Rao.

The Income Tax department, had on Wednesday, searched 11 locations linked to Rao, including his official chamber and residence, besides those of his son, and claimed to have seized ₹30 lakh in new currency and 5 kg gold.

This has triggered a speculation in the state over Rao's exit, but the state government had not made any comments over till now.

The Hindu hadreported earlier in the day that the names of those who may replace Rao were already started doing rounds and Vaidyanathan was one of the contenders for the position.

Rao was appointed chief secretary in June this year.

Income Tax department officials said that Rao had cooperated in the investigation. His son Vivek, according to a PTI report, had admitted to having undisclosed income of ₹5 crore. His statement has been recorded.
