The trailer of Jolly LLB 2, the sequel to Subhash Kapoor's surprise hit, Jolly LLB (2013), dropped online early morning today.
One of the biggest change in the sequel is the casting of the leading man. Arshad Warsi, who played the role of a bumbling lawyer in the first part, has been replaced by the more 'bankable' Akshay Kumar.
As Warsi said, the decision to replace him, despite the first film being a success, was taken because of Kumar's stardom that makes marketing the film 'easier' for the producers.
In an industry known to choose stars over actors, this didn't come as a surprise.
While having Akshay will perhaps make the film reach a wider audience, going by its trailer, Jolly LLB 2 just doesn't seem to possess the charm or the wit that made its predecessor such a memorable entertainer.
The sequel looks unbearably loud and the small-town vibe that the first one got right, seems a bit forced here. The dialogue is pretty banal and the relatable humor that made the original stand out has been replaced by substandard slapstick (there is literally a lot of slapping) comedy as is Amrita Rao by Huma Qureshi.
The two actors who are reprising their roles from Jolly LLB are Anu Kapoor and Saurabh Shukla.
To quote Warsi from an earlier interview: "I was supposed to do Jolly LLB 2, but Fox Star Studios needed a bigger star, so they chose Akshay. It makes it easier for marketing, it makes it easier to have a hit. With me, you (the filmmakers) have to make a good film, so that is the problem. You can make money with me only if it's a very good film."
Guess we'll find this out only on February 10.
