Rio Olympics and sportswomen PV Sindhu, Dipa Karmakar and Sakshi Malik were among the most searched terms on Google in India in 2016, according to Google's annual list of the most-searched terms. Social media meme Sonam Gupta ranked high as well, being the third most-search 'person' on Google in India in 2016.
Google revealed that Rio Olympics 2016 was the top trending search query in India for the year, followed by the online game Pokemon Go, the Euro 2016 football tournament, and Bollywood films Sultan and Kabali. US President Donald Trump was on top of the list of trending personalities, followed by Olympic badminton silver medalist PV Sindhu, online meme Sonam Gupta and gymnast Dipa Karmakar.
Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma's Sultan and Rajinikanth's Kabali were the most trending movies of the year, while MS Dhoni: The Untold Story stars Sushant Singh Rajput and Disha Patani were the most searched male and female Bollywood actors of the year respectively.
The most surprising part of the list is that the term, 'demonetisation' appears just once, being the seventh-most searched term in the top trending news events.
According Google, the world's most-used search engine, trending queries are the searches that had the highest spike in traffic over a sustained period in 2016 as compared to 2015. Globally, Pokémon Go was the most trending search term, followed by iPhone 7 and Donald Trump. The global results can be viewed here.
