Jayalalithaa's Memorial To Cost ₹15 Crore, Say Reports

A memorial will be built in the final resting place of Chennai's former chief minister J Jayalalithaa who breathed her last on 5 December.

According to reports, the Tamil Nadu state government has allocated ₹15 crore to build a memorial for Jayalalithaa at the Marina, in Chennai, where she was buried next to her mentor and former Tamil film star MG Ramachandran.

A source told The Hindu that a tender for building the memorial will be given out soon. He said:

"The money has been allotted and officials have taken the measurements around where Amma was laid to rest. A tender will be floated, and after the minimum required period, work on her memorial will be undertaken at full speed."

In fact, a report in The Times of India suggests that among the lakhs of Amma supporters who have been visiting her final resting spot, were several builders and architects who had come to check out the building possibilities for the 'monument'.

Jayalalithaa, an actress-turned-political leader died late on 5 December at a hospital in Chennai, nearly three months after she was admitted there. She was 68 years old.
