Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram, who passed away late Monday night following a heart attack, was revered as "Amma" by her supporters. But the late leader of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) had a playful side, which would surface in rare interviews.
The 68-year-old leader was once Tamil cinema's most glamorous heroine, until she chose to storm male bastions to become one of the most influential politicians in the country. Despite her deification by supporters, and her image as a ruthless political figure, she could choose to be light-hearted and whimsical on occasion.
In an interview with Simi Garewal in 1999, Jayalalithaa confessed that she had big crushes on cricketer Nari Contractor and film star Shammi Kapoor, and spoke about her favourite films. Garewal even convinced the former filmstar to sing during the interview.
