If you are stealing a car, you wouldn't probably want to take a nap inside it. This is exactly what happened to a carjacker in Seattle when carmaker BMW trapped him by tracking the car and remotely locking it.
The crime blog SPD Bottler reported that the suspect was found fast asleep behind the wheel when the police zeroed down on him. The man had earlier spotted a BMW 550i parked in a garage with the keys inside and decided to steal it.
The owner reported the incident to the police. The authorities contacted the BMW corporate team which took help of the technology to trace the car and use the remote control system to lock the thief down.
The team even played the hissing voices from the sound system of the car saying "I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here withme". Which is a line from the movie The Watchmen.
The police reported that the thief was also caught with a small amount of methamphetamine and was charged with theft and drug possession charges.
BMW is planning to invest heavily into technology as it prepares to test autonomous vehicles in Germany next year. Interestingly, Reliance Jio is also working on a device which will enable the owner of the car to take control of the vehicle remotely.
