Sairat, which is the highest-grossing Marathi film ever, is going to get a Bollywood remake soon.
Trade magazineSuper Cinema reports that Karan Johar's Dharma Productions has officially bought the film's remake rights.
Dharma will co-produce the film with Zee, the producers behind the original Marathi hit.
The magazine reports that a team of writers is already working on the first draft of the Bollywood-version of Sairat and the emphasis is to make the story pan-Indian.
Starring newbies Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar, Sairat is a tragic story of star-crossed lovers and explores the caste dynamics in rural Maharashtra. It has been directed by Nagraj Manjule, who previously directed the critically-acclaimed Marathi-drama Fandry.
Sairat's success has been quite phenomenal. Made on a meager budget of Rs. 4 crores, the film grossed over 100 crores at the box-office, the first Marathi film to do so. So thrilled were the producers with the response to the film that they announced a bonus of Rs. 5 crores each for the film's two lead actors.
Remakes of Sairat that are in the pipeline include one in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam, all of which are slated to go on floors early next year.
