Ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the scrapping of ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes, people are coming up with new ways to use their 'unearned' cash or to just get rid of it.

According to a report in NDTV, a Tamil Nadu temple received an offering of ₹44 lakh in 500 and 1,000 rupee notes this Sunday.

The authorities at the Jalakandeswarar Temple in Vellore are not sure if the money has come from a single devotee or from a group of people.

"We will deposit this in the bank for exchange. This is the highest ever contribution to the temple," NDTV quoted temple secretary S. Suresh Kumar as saying.

With the sudden announcement of the demonetising of ₹500 and ₹1000 notes, the government also declared that any exchanged amount of over ₹2.5 lakh in banned currency notes would invite scrutiny by income tax authorities. As a result, temple authorities are unsure if the donated amount can be used for the temple or not.

People can exchange or deposit their old notes in banks or post offices until 30 December.
