BHOPAL -- The post-mortem report of the eight SIMI terrorists, who were gunned down hours after they escaped from the Bhopal Central Jail earlier on Monday, stated there were multiple entry and exit wounds and that majority of the wounds were above waist.

The report added that the clothes of the terrorists have been sent for forensic test.

The SIMI terrorists broke out of the jail after slitting a guard's throat and were found hours later in a thickly forested area on the outskirts of the city where they were killed in an encounter.

Bhopal Inspector General of Police Yogesh Choudhary earlier defended the action to open fire on the terrorists, saying they were neutralized in 'retaliatory' fire, adding that the suspects have been continuously perpetrating serious offences and also killed police constables in 2008 and 2011.

Choudhary said they had a track record of being involved in serious crimes before.

Following the furore among the political circles demanding a probe to verify the authenticity of the encounter, Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Rishi Kumar Shukla on Tuesday announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the killings.

The decision to form the SIT came after the opposition parties demanded an independent high-level judicial probe into the matter.
