A 16-year-old girl in Hyderabad allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room on Tuesday, the police said.

According to a report in NDTV, Sathvika, a student in the city's Sri Chaitanya College, set herself on fire. Minutes before taking this extreme step, she had called her mother, asking that she be allowed to leave the hostel. No suicide note was found at the spot.

Reports say that the deceased attended her classes till 12:30 pm on Tuesday morning and later, as the rest of her classmates left for lunch, rushed to her room and called her mother.

On their way back from lunch, some students noticed smoke coming from the fourth floor. When informed, hostel authorities found that Sathvika's room was on fire.

"We are not sure if she used petrol, kerosene or a deodorant, as the scene was heavily burnt, even after school officials doused the fire. We have taken samples from the body and the ash to investigate this further," reports quoted senior police officer N. Bujanga Rao as saying.

"She had called her mother and told her that she does not want to stay in the hostel," another officer reportedly said.

Shocked at Sathvika's decision to end her life, her friends said that she was among the college's best students.

A case of suspicious death has been registered.
