Days after a rape survivor in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, delivered a baby boy in a local hospital, offers to adopt the infant have been pouring in for the family.
The 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an acquaintance on promise of marriage. The man had walked out on finding that she was pregnant.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, there have been about 24 requests for adoption. But the girl's father, who has seven other children, is upset that people only wanted to adopt the baby, but "no one was interested in the well-being of his daughter or his family."
He told The Times of India:
"I have been meeting so many of them. They started coming to the hospital since early morning. There are others, too, who want to meet. But what do I tell them? The matter regarding the baby's future will be decided by the court. We have already moved the Allahabad high court regarding the future of the child."
A few months ago, the case had drawn a lot of attention because the rape survivor and her father had moved Allahabad High Court to acquire permission to terminate her pregnancy. She had been pregnant for over 30 weeks at the time, and had been denied.
According to the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act a foetus older than 20 weeks is not allowed to be aborted by law.
Now, after his daughter has delivered the baby, the victim's father is still worried about the future of their family.
