The 18th Mumbai Film Festival (popularly known as MAMI) will host the world premiere of Trapped, an indie film directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, HuffPostIndia has exclusively learnt.

Motwane has previously directed two critically acclaimed films: the festival darling Udaan (2010), and the Ranveer Singh-Sonakshi Sinha starrer Lootera. Currently, he is also working on a vigilante drama titled Bhavesh Joshi, featuring Harshvardhan Kapoor in the lead.

Confirming the news, Motwane told HuffPost, "I'm ecstatic, and absolutely petrified, to be premiering my film at MAMI. It's a film based in Mumbai and it's apt that its world premiere be here, in the presence of my hometown audience and at a festival I absolutely adore."

The film, a survival drama, features National Award-winning actor Rajkummar Rao, whose character is trapped in a room for about 25 days in a Mumbai apartment. It was shot in a span of less than a month in Mumbai last year.

The movie is aiming for a February 2017 theatrical release after which it will be available on Netflix.

Interestingly, this is Rajkummar Rao's third film to play at MAMI, the first two being Shahid and Aligarh.

Excited about the development, Rao, who was shooting for his next in Lucknow, told HuffPost, "I am thrilled about the fact that we are having our world premiere at MAMI. I have an old association with the festival. We have made this film with so much of love and passion. As an actor I always wanted to do something like this and now that I've got a chance to do it with Motwane sir, it's as they say Sone pe Suhaga."

At MAMI, Trapped will play in a section called Spotlight, which will also screen films from other renowned Indian filmmakers.

According to its official description, Spotlight is "a carefully crafted segment of films that recognises Indian cinema's historical trajectories, celebrates its creative impulses and explores its futures."

Some of the other filmmakers who will be showcasing their work in the section include Priyadarshan, whose AIDS-drama Sila Sayamgalil will screen there, Brahmanand Singh's Jagjit Singh tribute, Kaagaz Ki Kashti, Adoor Gopalkrishnan's existential drama Pinneyum, auteur Buddhadeb Dasgupta's Tope, and an anthology film called Shor Se Shuruat, which has been directed by as many as eight filmmakers.

The 8 filmmakers — Supriya Sharma, Arunima Sharma, Rahul V. Chittela, Pratik Kothari, Amira Bhargava, Annie Zaidi, Satish Raj and Kasireddi — have been mentored by top Bollywood directors like Imtiaz Ali, Sriram Raghavan, Mira Nair, Shyam Benegal, Zoya Akhtar, Nagesh Kukunoor, and Homi Adajania.
