After teasing viewers with endless pictures of Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor kissing, Yash Raj Films finally unveiled the full-length trailer of Aditya Chopra's Befikre, a romantic drama set in Paris.
The trailer was showcased at a ceremony held near the Eiffel Tower in Paris in the presence of the city's mayor, Anne Hidalgo, along with leads Ranveer and Vaani. All three of them addressed the press and a few VIP delegates from France who attended the event.
The famously reticent Aditya Chopra, who has an almost clinical aversion to the media and flashbulbs, stayed away from the ceremony.
One thing the trailer tells you is that Ranveer and Vaani share an electric chemistry -- there is underlying sexual tension in almost all the scenes one can glimpse in the trailer.
However, one cannot really praise Befikre for its originality. Although the leads make for a refreshing couple, the story seems derivative and recycled from every romcom ever that believes in dissing love and choosing sex instead, before the collective melting of the hearts.
Like film critic Sukanya Verma pointed out in a tweet, Befikre seems to be a cross between No Strings Attached and Yann Samuel's Love Me If You Dare, with a healthy topping of Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha (they decide not to exchange numbers for maintaining anonymity.)
What's perhaps interesting to note is the gradual progression of Chopra as a filmmaker — the man who gave Bollywood the iconic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge, a film that firmly believed in upholding the 'right' kind of family values, finds himself in a space that reflects a very modern idea of love, with sexually liberated characters who may or may not believe in love as we traditionally understand it.
Now, what remains to be seen is if Befikre manages to surprise us by subverting the genre long-mastered by Hollywood and European cinema.
Directed by Aditya Chopra, who last helmed the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Befikre opens in theatres on December 9.
