A police complaint has been lodged against veteran actor Om Puri after his controversial remarks against Army Jawans in a television debate on Tuesday. According to the complaint, filed in the Andheri West police station, the 65-year-old had insulted the Indian Army and the nation, and should be booked for sedition under section 124 (A) of the Indian Penal Code.

"We have received an application (complaint) from a person against Om Puri", said Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Dudhe. "Mumbai police is inquiring the matter. Further action will be taken based on the probe."

Puri had made the comments in a television debate about the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association's (IMPPA) indefinite ban on Pakistani artistes from working in Indian projects after the Uri attack. He had said no one had forced any soldier to pick up weapons and join the Indian Army, and that Pakistani artists working in India came on visas issued by the Indian government.

"It is not merely a division of the country; it is the partition of families. Our country houses 22 crore Muslims and they have their relatives on the other side and vice versa. India has the second largest population of Muslims in the world," he had said. "You want India-Pakistan to be turned into Israel and Palestine and indulge in a fight for centuries."
