A 5-year-old girl is battling for her life in Hyderabad after she and her mother were hit by a suspected drunk driver on Sunday evening. According to reports, Sanjana and her mother were crossing the road at Pedda Amberpet, when the speeding car hit them.
SV Sridevi, 30, suffered multiple fractures while the five-year-old is on ventilator support.
"I was starting to cross the road holding my daughter's hand. We were still by the side of the road when the car hit us," Deccan Chronicle quoted Sridevi saying.
She further said the car dragged Sanjana for several meters before stopping, causing grievous injuries to her.
The driver and two other occupants of the car, who fled the spot after the accident, surrendered to the police on Monday evening.
According to eyewitnesses, Venkatramana, a software engineer, was drinking inside the car with his two friends on Vijayawada highway towards Hyderabad.
Police said they confiscated the Santro car (AP 29 N 5799), in the name of Suneetha Rajulapudi, and recovered bottles of alcohol and snacks.
"We found a water bottle filled with a liquor like substance inside the car. There were also eatables and disposable glasses, which indicates they were drinking," SI G Manmadha Kumar reportedly said.
In July this year, a class IV student, Ramya, and her family was killed after a drunk engineering student rammed into their car.
