Modaks are a passé at Ganesh festivals. At least in this village of Karnataka.
According to a Bangalore Mirror report, in Bhagyanagar village in Koppal district, whiskey and chicken are being offered as "naivedya" to the deity.
The report notes that it is a tradition that is followed by around 100 families of the Kshatriya community in the village.
So why do they offer liquor and chicken? They believe that 'Ganesha' will be pleased with this and will bless them with wealth and joy.
"We believe that Ganesha is not satisfied with just vegetarian dishes and hence needs to be offered non-vegetarian food, in addition to the milk and tender coconut water that is generally offered," Raghu Bhavikatti told Mirror.
He has been following this tradition for over three decades now.
A bottle of liquor is placed in front of the idol during the entire festival. Liquor is also sprinkled on the idol as part of the naivedya.
The menu changes every day. Fish and mutton are offered to the deity.
