In a shocking incident, a 12-year-old girl was allegedly abducted by two Ola cab drivers, raped, murdered and dumped into a canal in Topsia in Kolkata, The Times of India reported.

Shankar Shaw and Guddu Singh, both drunk and in search of "some fun", had forced the girl, who lived on a pavement in central Kolkata, into their car. The girl's mother, who washes dishes at a neighbouring shop, immediately raised an alarm.

According to NDTV, the police said the men drove to Park Circus flyover in south Kolkata, where they took turns to assault the girl through the night. They strangled her and threw her body into the canal, from where it was recovered.

The car's registration number was traced from a traffic post camera near the place of abduction, which helped the police track the killers. "As we got the registration number, we found out the address of the car owner who gave the details of the drivers and within the next few hours we tracked them. After an hour's grilling the duo confessed the crime and took us to the spot where they had dumped her, " a senior officer of Hare Steet police station told Times of India.

This is the first time a major crime by a driver of a cab aggregator has been reported from Kolkata, though several such incidents have taken place in Delhi in the past couple of years.

A statement from Ola said, "We are saddened by the reports of the alleged misbehaviour of a driver in Kolkata. On preliminary identification of the cab details shared by authorities, we have suspended the account associated with this cab with immediate effect. As per our records, this incident has not occurred while on the Ola platform. We will work with the authorities to share any information that will help support their investigation."
