Vinay Sharma, one of the convicts sentenced to death for gangrape, torture and killing of a young medical student in 2012, attempted suicide on Wednesday night in Tihar jail.

Sharma reportedly consumed pills and tried to hang himself after.

According to ANI reports, he has been moved to a hospital where he is receiving medical assistance. However, his condition is not yet known.

Last year, Sharma had demanded extra security in jail, claiming that he was physically assaulted by other inmates and police officials there.

In March 2013, another convict Ram Singh, the driver of the bus in which the woman was assaulted, was found hanging in Tihar jail.

On December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old paramedic was fatally assaulted and gangraped by six persons in a moving bus in south Delhi and thrown out of the vehicle on that night.

She died in hospital 13 days later, leaving the nation shocked and angry.

One of the accused--a juvenile at the time of the crime — was convicted and sentenced to three years in a reformation home. He was released from the observation home in December last year.
