Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, who has a history of making callous remarks, has now suggested that the gang rape of a woman and her teenage daughter in Uttar Pradesh on Friday night could be a political conspiracy.

The family of a cab driver was attacked by armed robbers near Bulandshahr, just about 60 kilometers from Delhi and less than 100 meters away from a police post. While the men were tied up and beaten, the cab driver's wife and daughter were gang raped for almost three hours.

The Samajwadi Party government led by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is under fire for the utter state of lawlessness in the state, and for failing to curb sexual violence against women.

While the family members of the survivors have narrated how the police failed to rescue them from their ghastly ordeal, Khan has suggested that SP's political opponents have hatched a conspiracy to make the ruling party look bad.

"We need to investigate whether this is a conspiracy by opponents who want to defame the government," said Khan, NDTV reported.

"For votes, people can stoop to any level. There can be a Muzaffarnagar, a Shamli and Kairana...why not this? For power, politicians can murder people, trigger riots, kill innocent people, so the truth has to be found out," he said.

Meanwhile, the family of the survivors has threatened to commit suicide if they do not get justice in three months. "My daughter is in a state of shock and has not eaten anything since the assault. We are trying to force-feed her," the father told journalists.
