Haryana tends to be in most people's bad books for its appalling record of sexual violence against women, and its skewed sex ratio, but this 29-year-old farmer from Jind provides a welcome break from the persisting narrative of gloom and doom.

Not only did Jitender Chhatar marry a woman, who was gang raped, but he also joined her battle for justice against those who attacked her, and he got his wife enrolled in a law course.

"She can join the judicial services or as a lawyer can help other rape survivors. We have already started a platform called, Youth Against Rapes," he told The Times of India.

Chattar said that before they tied the knot, his future wife advised him to reconsider the marriage, which could have an adverse impact on his social life, but neither he nor his family members changed their minds.

"I and my family owe a lot to Jitender as part from fighting off the taboo, he is also facing the ire of the accused who try to frame him in false cases," his wife told TOI.

Chattar is now seeking trying to seek help from Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to secure the arrest of one out of the four persons accused in his wife's case, who is still at large.
