Noted Indian artist SH Raza, who passed away on Saturday, left behind a legacy of abstract art, famously focussed on the bindu, or dot.
The 94-year-old artist, who passed away on 23 July after a prolonged illness, had popularised Indian philosophy and iconography through his artwork.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, the late artist used to describe the relation of the bindu to his art as: "The seed, the germ, the core that gives birth to the fecundity of the world."
For Raza, the bindu was the germ, the core that gives birth to the fecundity of the world.
But according to The Wire, Raza and his relationship with the bindu went back to his school days.
"He credited his school teachers as having a formidable influence on him, especially his headmaster who taught him to calm his restless spirit by meditating on a point, which he drew on the wall. Raza later attributed the formulation of his signature bindu to this childhood memory," says the article.
The Press Information Bureau paid a tribute to Raza by posing a .gif of nine of his best-known paintings that feature the bindu.

Raza's mortal remains will be flown from New Delhi to Mandala in Madhya Pradesh, where his last rites will be conducted according to his wishes.
