A 17-year-old boy was found dead with multiple injuries at the residence of writer Amit Chaudhuri in Kolkata.

Aabesh Dasgupta, a student of Class XII, had reportedly come to the birthday party of Chaudhuri's daughter at their home in the posh neighbourhood of Sunny Park in South Kolkata. He was found lying in a pool of blood at the car park near the play area of the apartment complex where the party had moved on during the afternoon. Police suspect the boy was stabbed multiple times with a sharp object in the chest. A broken bottle neck has been retrieved from the site.

It is believed that the attack was spurred on by a drunken brawl, though one of the 17 teenagers who attended the party claimed Aabesh had fallen down and hurt himself without being hit by anyone. The police suspect at least one individual, but they have not disclosed any names as the person under suspicion is a minor. A case will be started only after the deceased boy's mother registers a complaint and names a suspect, an officer told The Telegraph.

Aabesh's mother, Rimjhim Dasgupta, took ill on hearing the news. "There were so many of them at the spot and no one saw anything? How is that possible? It should take the police a couple of minutes to find out," she said to The Telegraph. Dasgupta had lost her husband, Swagato Dasgupta, in February earlier this year. He had worked as an assistant director to Sandip Ray, son of Satyajit Ray, on several films.

On hearing a noise, one of the guards at the apartment complex had rushed to the area to find the victim on the floor and writhing in pain. Chaudhuri was already there, trying to call an ambulance. Eventually, he sent off the boy to the hospital in a car and followed him in another. The boy was, however, declared brought dead at the hospital.

Earlier in the day, the group of boys and girls had gone to two clubs, both of which refused to serve them alcohol. By the evening, they seemed to have secured at least "three bottles of vodka" somehow and a few were allegedly inebriated. The Chaudhuris had decided to tone down the celebrations after the writer's mother, Bijoya Chaudhuri, passed away last week.
