Xiaomi launched its giant smartphone, Mi Max, today at an event in New Delhi which saw fans fighting for t-shirts before the keynote took place. Along with the phone, the company also introduced their latest software customisation over Android MIUI 8. Xiaomi is targeting Mi Max at people who are using a tablet as a calling device.

Mi Max was first launched in China last month. It runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 650/652. It has two options in RAM, at 3 GB and 4 GB. And, its storage also comes in the two variants of 32 GB and 128 GB. The first variant is priced at ₹14,999 and the second one is priced at ₹19,999.

Though large in size, the phone is actually quite slim and sleek, with a thickness of just 7.5 mm. Its extra-large body allows it to pack a 4850 mAh battery, but, sadly, without any fast charging capability.

The Mi Max has a dual SIM tray, with both SIM slots being VoLTE (Voice over LTE) enabled. The 16 MP rear camera has Phase Detection Auto Focus facility, and the front camera has a resolution of 5 MP.

Xiaomi also introduced their newest software customization over Android MIUI 8. There are many notable changes in the latest version, from telephony to messages and app profiles. The most notable feature is that you can run one app two times (under two profiles) on one phone. For instance, if you want separate WhatsApp accounts for your work number and personal number, that is possible under MIUI 8.

The other notable feature in MIUI 8 is called scrolling screenshot, where you can take a screenshot of a long web page without using multiple screenshots. Xiaomi has also made changes to the dialler, which now allows you to use T9 in Hindi and automatic caller ID.

MIUI is launching the public beta channel on 11 July and the stable release roll out will begin on 16 August. Xiaomi Mi Max, Mi 5, Mi 4, Mi 3, Redmi Note 2 and Redmi note 3 are eligible for the update.

There are many phones available at the same price point as Mi Max but they are all much smaller. The Mi Max can be a great alternative to a tablet, but it remains to be seen how many users will be tempted to make the switch.
