After he was allegedly offered Rs 25 lakh in bribe to deliver a favourable judgement in a gold smuggling case, a Kerala High Court judge on Monday withdrew from the case.

Justice KT Shankaran, the senior-most judge in the Kerala High Court, was hearing the case of smuggling of more than 500 kg of gold into the country from the Middle East through the Kochi airport over a period of time.

The police have booked the prime accused and his accomplices under the anti-smuggling COFEPOSA law. They are in the custody since October last year.

Shankaran was allegedly asked by the accomplices of the accused to drop the stringent sections in the case and water it down

to help the accused.

The judge was offered money for the favour after which he recused from the case.
