Smoking kills, but the vice may also help you shed a few kilos, says a new study.

The study was done on rats and when nicotine was administered to them, it restricted body weight gain irrespective of the quantity of food intake, ANI reported, quoting from the study.

On the contrary, when the dosage of nicotine was reduced, it was noticed that there was a substantial gain in weight.

The study, conducted over a period of 20 days, showed that there was around 40% weight gain when nicotine administration was tapered off, although the quantity of food intake was kept constant.

The findings assume importance since it highlights the fact that even low nicotine levels may lead to weight loss, according to the lead author of the study, which was published in Nicotine and Tobacco Research.

A deeper insight into the neurobiological properties of nicotine that causes addiction and those which cause weight loss may pave the way for landmark inventions in obesity pharmacotherapy.
