The Delhi University said on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BA degree is "authentic" and it has all the relevant records relating to his graduation.

The clarification by the DU's registrar Tarun Das comes after AAP leaders went to the university to verify the Prime Minister’s degree. The AAP leaders were asked to come on Wednesday.

"We have checked our records and it has been authenticated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's degree is authentic. He cleared the examination in 1978 and was awarded the degree in 1979," he said.

A day earlier, BJP President Amit Shah had flashed Modi’s bachelor’s degree certificate at a press conference to counter the claims made by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The Delhi Chief Minister had filed an application with the CIC demanding that Modi's educational qualification be made public.

Asked about certain discrepancies being alleged by AAP in his marksheets and degree certificate, Das said, "the discrepancies in the names in two marksheets exist in university records as well."

"The university seeks to maintain privacy of any student who is getting enrolled with it. In view of the queries and reports in media, we would like to state that Narendra Damodardas Modi had qualified for degree of Bachelors in Arts.

His enrollment number was CC 594/74 and his examination roll number number was 16594," he added.

Asked about variations in Modi's names in marksheets, Das said it is a common error as far as middle names are concerned. "Similar errors are often pointed out by other students as well which are rectified when requested."

On being asked about AAP's allegation that why he was awarded the degree in 1979 when he graduated in 1978, Das said "It is difficult to comment on minor errors."

AAP leaders had alleged that the documents, presented by BJP leaders Amit Shah and Arun Jaitley at Monday's press conference, were 'forged' and had 'glaring discrepancies' in them.

"It's unfortunate that we have to hold this press meet to clarify the Prime Minister's educational qualification status," said Shah, who is also the party president. The PM has a BA degree from the Delhi University as an external candidate and a MA degree from Gujarat university, they had said.

The two BJP leaders demanded a public apology from the Delhi Chief Minister, who has been campaigning for the PM's degrees to be made public. Calling Kejriwal's charges "baseless", Union Minister Arun Jaitley said, "public discourse has stooped low" in the wake of the allegations by the Aam Admi Party supremo.
