When Rajinikanth speaks, the Internet listens.
The teaser for Pa. Ranjith's Kabali, starring the Tamil superstar and Radhika Apte, was released online over the weekend. Predictably, it shattered the Internet. As of Monday evening, the one-minute video, which features thalaivar in the role of an ageing gangster, had been viewed more than 6 million times on YouTube, well on its way to 7 million and more. When this writer refreshed the YouTube page after a gap of about 30 minutes, the number of views had risen by nearly 1,90,000.
The response to the teaser has reportedly broken a number of records. It has become the fastest Indian — and, according to some reports, Asian — film promo to reach the milestone of 5 million views in a mere 24 hours. Trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai, in a piece for FirstPost, wrote: "Rajinikanth’s Kabali teaser has broken the existing YouTube record of Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale trailer, which garnered 3.6 million hits in 24 hours. It also beat the record set by the Tamil film, Theri, which got 2.2 million views in 24 hours."

There are some people who've taken fandom to a whole new level, as is often the case with Rajinikanth.
Kabali, slated to release in July (according to Pillai), is the 65-year-old actor's first film since KS Ravikumar's Lingaa (2014), which had performed below-par at the box-office. It is his first time working with Ranjith, who is a young director best known for critically acclaimed entertainers such as Attakathi (2012) and Madras (2014). Shot largely in Malaysia, it has reportedly cost approximately Rs 100 crore to make.
