A young Dalit clerk employed at an Ahmedabad court killed himself by hanging at his home on Sunday evening, after being allegedly harassed and discriminated by five colleagues at his workplace, according to a news report.
Ketan Koradia (31) was employed as a clerk in Gheekanta Metropoliton Court in Ahmedabad where he was subjected to casteist comments by his colleagues, The Indian Express reported.
The Behrampura, Danilimbda resident killed himself after being harassed for three years since joining the accounts department in 2013, according to the FIR filed by Dalpat Koradia, Ketan's father.
According to Dalpat Koradia, Ketan was transferred back and forth for no reason and this forced his son to go on leave, finally leading to depression.
In his FIR filed at the Danilimbda police station, the father has handed over the note naming five court officers CK Trivedi, GJ Shah, RP Barot, KC Bhavsar and Bhati Saheb who allegedly harassed Ketan.
He had been depressed because of the castiest harassment and despite his leave getting over, didn't resume office, the father said.
Danilimbda police inspector M K Rana said, Ketan had dispute with five of his colleagues who are said to have been harassing him. He was on leave and didn't turn up in office despite notices issued by his office.
The case has been transferred to Assistant Commissioner of Police, K Division for investigation as it falls under the SC/ST Atrocities Act.
Earlier in the year, a Dalit scholar in Hyderabad Central University killed himself by hanging in a friend's hostel room on the campus after he was rusticated.
Rohith Vemula, a PhD student, was found hanging in a hostel room on the HCU campus on January 17, sparking strong reactions on the campus and across the country. Rohith and four other students, all from the dalit community, were suspended last year by the varsity for allegedly attacking an ABVP leader.
