Surprise, Surprise. 'Anti-National' JNU Among Country's Top 10 Universities, According To Govt's Own Ranking

While many voices affiliated with the ruling dispensation have vilified the Jawaharlal Nehru University in the heart of the capital as a hotbed of Leftist politics and a breeding ground of 'anti-national' elements, a government ranking has a completely different story to tell.

According to a list prepared by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), released by Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi today, JNU ranked number three among the country's top universities. Hyderabad University, that is seeing mass protests by students after the suicide of research scholar Rohith Vemula, has ranked fourth.

Among engineering institutes, the IIT Madras has ranked as the country's top engineering college, followed by IIT Mumbai and IIT Kharagpur. IIM Bangalore topped the list of India's best management institutes followed by IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta.

The government ranking further vindicates JNU's march as a premier institute of learning. Earlier, the UK-based QS World University Rankings rated its Centre for the Study of Social Systems (CSSS) 51st, up by 7 ranks compared with last year. The CSSS specialises in research on subaltern, Dalit and tribal studies.

the boiling campus of JNU has been in the focus ever since a political group called a meeting to commemorate the death anniversary of terrorist Afzal Guru on February 9. Even though Guru was given a trial and then hanged to death, a section of students stoically maintain that justice was not done in his case.

Investigations have revealed that some outsiders raised anti-national slogans at the meeting. The meeting led to the arrest of student leader Kanhaiya Kumar on charges of anti-nation activities. Kumar became an overnight star after he gave a stirring speech at the campus after his release on bail. Sedition charges were also slapped on Kumar's fellow students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya. Both have been released on bail.

VHP firebrand Sadhvi Prachi had even alleged that terrorist Hafiz Saeed funded the JNU protests. Voices sympathetic with the Bharatiya Janata Party government at the centre have repeatedly accused politically-active researchers of JNU of wasting taxpayers' money.

A day after Kumar riled many from the government by his speech, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu even advised people studying "in universities funded by centre" to "study and not indulge in politics".

The four categories of ranking included engineering, management, pharmacy and universities and colleges. Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences topped the pharmacy list. All 122 centrally-funded institutions participated in the first round of ranking, reported Indian Express, calling the list a first-of-its-kind.
