New rules proposed by the Ministry of Environment and Forests to manage electronic waste must be implemented with firm political will to close the gap between growing volumes of hazardous trash and inadequate recycling infrastructure, says an editorial in The Hindu. "The success of the new rules will depend on incentivising such consumers to enter the formal recycling channel using the producer-operated buy-back scheme," says the article.

An opinion piece by Ashok Gulati in The Indian Express states that the Narendra Modi government seems to have gone into an overdrive to appease farmers, with several rallies organised that resonate the Prime Minister's dream — double the incomes of farmers by 2022. "Other paths to doubling farmer incomes include raising productivity and diversification into high-value agriculture as well as diversification of farm employment into non-farm activities... And if Modi can keep food price inflation below 5-6 per cent, and raise farmers’ nominal incomes by 12 per cent per annum, his 'dream' may just come true," he says.

The formation of a credible third front has suddenly electrified the poll atmosphere in Tamil Nadu, says an editorial in The Telegraph. "For each constituent of the PWF, long reduced to bit players, an alliance with the DMDK meant being immediately transported from the periphery to the centre of the political show. For both Vaiko of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Thol Thirumavalavan of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, it was a way of getting back at their friend-turned-foe, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which had been hoping that the Captain would come around and help the DMK-Congress alliance emerge a clear winner... A third front may indicate more choice for voters and the shrinking stature of the older Dravida parties, but it could also mean the beginning of chaotic coalition governance in Tamil Nadu, where no single party can steal the show," says the editorial.
