From cricketers to Bollywood stars, celebrities condemned the attack on police horse Shaktiman, which left it with an amputated leg. The horse, which serves the Uttarakhand police force, was injured grievously during a BJP protest in Uttarakhand.

Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt, whose film Kapoor & Sons released this Friday, wrote:

This is beyond disgusting!!!!! How can we let this happen???? Can we not even spare animals now?? pic.twitter.com/xzHHuo6vpN

Indian batsman Virat Kohli was furious after hearing about the incident. Sharing a photo of the horse on Instagram, Kohli said, "I urge everyone to unite and make sure the person who has done this to this beautiful beast, gets the harshest of punishment and experiences the same pain the horse has. I am honestly ashamed of calling this person a fellow country man. He is a coward and doesn't even deserve to called a man. (sic)"

On 14 March, during an agitation led by BJP MLA Ganesh Joshi against Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat, a mob attacked the mounted police force which was deployed to bring the situation under control. Videos released from the incident showed the crowd running towards Shaktiman and a man pulling the horse's leash, following which the animal lost its balance and fell.

Joshi, who is accused of hurting the horse, was arrested on Thursday along with BJP leader Pradeep Bora.
