SAR Geelani Sent To 14-Day Judicial Custody

NEW DELHI -- Former Delhi University lecturer S.A.R. Geelani, who was arrested on the charges of sedition, was on Thursday sent to 14-day judicial custody.

He will be kept in 'High Risk Ward' of Jail Number 1 of Tihar Jail.

Geelani was arrested on the charges of sedition in connection with an event held at the Press Club of India (PCI) on 10 February, where 'anti-India' slogans were allegedly raised.

Earlier on Tuesday, the police produced Geelani before Metropolitan Magistrate Harvinder Singh and sought two-day police custody.

Geelani's arrest comes amid a raging controversy over the arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University's students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar on charges of sedition .

The police had after registering the case also questioned DU professor Ali Javed, a Press Club member, who had booked the hall for the event.
