PATNA--In a major embarrassment for the ruling Grand Alliance in Bihar, an RJD legislator has been booked for allegedly raping a minor.
An arrest order was issued on Saturday night against RJD MLA Raj Ballabh Yadav in connection with the rape case of a minor girl last week, a senior police officer said.
On February 6, a minor girl reported to the Nalanda district police that a woman named Sulekha Devi took her an undisclosed place about 15 km away from the district headquarters, Bihar Sharif.
According to NDTV reports, the woman forced the 15-year-old to have liquor after which she was allegedly raped by a man.
All this while Devi was present there, the minor alleged in her complaint to the police.
Devi then gave the girl Rs. 30,000 but she went home and informed her parents about the incident who approached the police.
During police investigations, the girl identified legislator Yadav as the man who allegedly raped her.
The statement of the girl has been taken under section 164 of IPC and an FIR in the case was lodged against Yadav with Women police station, Nalanda, on February 9, he said.
The girl had identified the accused MLA when his photograph was shown to her and later she identified him in person also, the DIG said. Yadav won from Nawada seat on RJD ticket in the recent Assembly election and has previously served as a minister in the RJD government.
When contacted, there was no response to several phone calls made to Yadav.
The RJD currently holds a majority in the Bihar assembly after state elections took place last year.
The state is already facing accusations of falling to “jungle raj”, after the murder of two Bharatiya Janata Party leaders there on Friday.
