India's ever growing clout in the technology world is boosted by the fact that now it has surpassed the USA to become world's second largest smartphone market after China.

In a report published by Counterpoint research, the analysts said that the smartphone shipment grew to 100 million in India. The percentage growth registered was 23% year-on-year. This was also boosted by the fact that many Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo, Lenovo and Huawei are pushing hard to make a mark in India. And because of these efforts, smartphones took 40% share in the shipments in the last quarter.

The report also suggests that due to the potential growth in LTE network in India, 50% of the smartphones shipped were LTE enabled. In addition to that, 33% percent of the smartphones were sold through the e-commerce websites in Q4 2015.

If we look at the market share, the report from Canalys suggests that Samsung took away the top spot from Micromax, who had a giant market share of 22% in 2014. Homegrown brands like Lava, Intex closed the gap on Micromax in terms shipments.

It looks like that this trend will be maintained and India will see more growth as new brands come up and bigger ones like Apple sets up their own stores in the country.
