Google search's head Amit Singhal has decided to leave the company and retire from work to focus on philanthropy. Singhal announced his retirement in a Google+ post after working at the internet giant for 15 years.

Amit Singhal, an IIT Roorkee graduate, had joined Google in the year 2000. During his tenure there, he helped the company in improving the search algorithm over the years. Singhal is also known for developing Google's Ad system Google AdWords, which earns them a huge chunk of the revenue. He was awarded the title of "Google Fellow" in 2006 for his contributions towards the company.

Singhal was part of small group of India-born executives who were in high-ranking jobs at the tech giant. Vic Gundotra, who headed Google Plus and Nikesh Arora who was head of revenue, left the company in recent years. With Singhal's departure, now Sundar Pichai, who is Google CEO, is the only one who remains at the firm from the original group.

"The fact that more than a billion people rely on the Google search prides me. Fifteen years ago I didn't imagine a single tap on the button would give me a lot of answers. My dream of the Star Trek Computer is becoming a reality". Singhal added that "It is time for me to step aside and give back to the less fortunate," Singhal wrote in the post.

Replacing him will be Google's AI and engineering head John Giannandrea. He has done projects like Smart Reply for Google Inbox and tagging and image searching in Google Photos. Giannandrea's role would be to make the search more sophisticated as more technologies like smart home and smart cars are coming up.

This announcement reflected in Alphabet's share prices dropping on the NASDAQ. This week, Alphabet toppled Apple to become the most valuable company in the world.
